We are the provincial association of the local adult education colleges (Volkshochschulen) of the Federal State of Saxony-Anhalt. There are 15 local education colleges in Saxony-Anhalt. With their sub-branches the colleges reach almost 80.000 people per year and implement an amount of 175.000 lessons in over 7.000 courses. Saxony-Anhalt is located in the heart of Germany and has about 2.24 million inhabitants. In the 11 counties and the 3 county free cities there are 31 locations of community colleges. These are grouped into 15 headquarters. The main locations are located in: Bitterfeld, Sangerhausen, Bernburg, Haldensleben, Merseburg, Zeitz, Lutherstadt Wittenberg, Halberstadt, Salzwedel, Osterburg, Burg, Stendal, Dessau, Halle and Magdeburg.
We, the provincial association aren't a school or adult education college. Our task is inter alia to provide training opportunities for our members, for their staff and their freelance teachers.
The size of the folk high schools and their further training offers are based on the existing requirements in the region and it therefore varies. Thus we have, for example, 2 community colleges, which cater for migrants in residential areas with up to 60%. Other folk high schools located in areas with a very weak social environment offer many courses to enable early school leavers to achieve a school graduation degree. There are also areas which have little contact with socially marginalized groups.
The colleges provide a great variety of courses in the field of continuing education for all groups of the population in all parts of our federal state. Educational offers range from general and political education through foreign language courses and further training on the job, classes in visual arts and creativity and health education. The local adult college is a centre for lifelong learning, discussion, health and culture.
The colleges offer courses for all interested citizens. One of its principle goals is to bring together people from different cultures with different interests, spheres of life, people with disabilities and of different age groups as well as to offer them the chance to learn together. In all our work, we want to build bridges between the various cultures, generations and layers of society.
In cooperation with partners in this project, we will gain and offer important insights into the adult education sector in Europe. This will offer our members and our organization the opportunity to map and respond to the educational needs and the EU's aims in lifelong and adult education.
The project will give us a chance to expand our network and cooperation between educational institutions in Europe. This project contributes to promoting equity, social cohesion and active citizenship and to improving the knowledge based on adult learning and monitoring of the sector.
